Nov. 29 (UPI) – Bodybuilder and Star Wars actor David Prowse has passed away, his management has announced.

Prowse revealed in 2014 that he was diagnosed with dementia.

“It is with great regret and heartbreaking sadness for us and millions of fans around the world to announce that our client DAVE PROWSE MBE has passed away at the age of 85. #DaveProwse @starwars #DarthVader # GreenCrossCodeMan #iconic #actor # bodybuilder #MBE, ”Bowington management tweeted on Saturday.

The exact cause of his death has not been specified.

The British actor, who was 6ft 6in tall, played the villainous Darth Vader in the Star Wars films of the 1970s and 1980s, but actor James Earl Jones gave the masked character his iconic voice.

Mark Hamill, who played Vader’s son Luke Skywalker in the blockbusters, took to Twitter to mourn Prowse’s death.

“So sad to hear that David Prowse has passed away. He was a nice man and much more than Darth Vader,” Hamill wrote. “Actor-husband-father-member of the Order of the British Empire-3 times British weightlifting champion and safety icon, the code man of the green cross. He loved his fans as much as they loved him. #TEAR.”

Prowse’s other credits include the Casino Royale, A Clockwork Orange, Horror of Frankenstein, and Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell movies, as well as The Saint, Space 1999, and Doctor Who TV shows.

He received his honor MBE from Queen Elizabeth II for playing Green Cross Code Man in a campaign to promote road safety in the UK.
